Every few months a customer asks us to fit a UV-C light or an ionizer into their split unit because a shop told them it will "kill the mold forever." It's a fair question in a place like Koh Samui, where units run almost year-round in heat and humidity that mold loves. Here's an honest breakdown of what these add-ons actually do.

What UV-C and Ionizers Actually Are

They are two different technologies often sold together as one "air purifying" package:

• UV-C light — a small bulb mounted near the evaporator coil that uses ultraviolet light to damage the DNA of mold spores, bacteria, and some viruses that land on the coil surface.
• Ionizer — a small module that releases charged ions into the airstream, causing dust, pollen, and some airborne particles to clump together and fall out of the air faster, or attach to filters and walls.

Neither is a filter. Neither physically removes what's already built up inside the unit.

Why This Comes Up So Often in Samui

On the island, most units run daily for 10+ hours in 70-90% humidity. That combination is exactly what mold and mildew need to establish themselves on the evaporator coil, drain pan, and blower wheel. Rental villas that sit empty for weeks between guests are especially prone to it, since a closed, humid, unused unit is close to ideal mold-growing conditions. So it's understandable that owners look for a "set it and forget it" fix rather than a recurring cleaning bill.

What They Can Realistically Do

• A UV-C bulb aimed directly at the coil surface can reduce how fast mold recolonizes a coil that's already clean, by continuously irradiating spores that land on it.
• It can noticeably reduce musty smells that come from live microbial growth on the coil, on units where smell was the main complaint.
• An ionizer can reduce fine dust circulating in the room, which helps units in dusty villas near construction or roads.

What They Can't Do

• They do nothing for mold or slime that has already built up inside the coil fins, drain pan, or ducting. That buildup needs a proper chemical coil wash, not light or ions.
• UV-C only affects surfaces the light actually reaches in a straight line. Mold hiding between coil fins, in the drain pan, or inside ducting is untouched.
• Neither device fixes the underlying cause: a clogged drain, blocked airflow, or a unit that's oversized and short-cycling, which keeps the coil wet and feeds new mold growth.
• Cheap ionizers can produce small amounts of ozone, which isn't something you want blowing into a bedroom all night.

In short: they're a supplement to cleaning, not a replacement for it.

Cost and Upkeep

• UV-C bulbs degrade with use and typically need replacing every 12-18 months for the unit to keep working as intended — an easy thing to forget once it's installed.
• Some cheaper ionizer modules fail silently; the unit still cools fine, so nobody notices the add-on stopped working.
• Installation for either is straightforward on most split units and starts from around 1,500฿ per indoor unit, depending on model and access.

When It's Worth Adding

• A villa with a mold-smell problem that keeps coming back a few months after a proper cleaning, especially bedroom units that run all night.
• Households with allergy or asthma sufferers who want an extra layer on top of a solid cleaning schedule.
• Rental properties where the unit sits idle and humid between bookings, where UV-C can slow regrowth in the gap.

When to Skip It

• If the unit hasn't had a proper chemical coil wash in the last 6-12 months, that's the real fix — book that first. Adding UV-C to a dirty coil is putting a bandage on a problem you can just clean off.
• If your main complaint is dust rather than smell, a good filter and regular filter washing usually does more for less money.
