Why Your Aircon Keeps Switching On and Off (Short Cycling) in Koh Samui
A healthy split AC cools your room, then cycles off for a stretch once the temperature is reached, then comes back on. If instead your unit is turning on and off every 2-5 minutes all day, that's called short cycling, and it's not normal wear — it usually points to a specific fault. Left alone, it wears out the compressor faster and pushes your electricity bill up, since the compressor draws the most power right at startup.
The Most Common Causes We See on Samui
Oversized unit for the room. A lot of older villas and guesthouses were fitted with whatever BTU unit was on hand, not what the room actually needs. An oversized unit chills the air so fast that the thermostat is satisfied almost immediately, shuts off, then the tropical heat and humidity push the temperature back up within minutes, so it restarts. This is one of the most frequent causes we find on call-outs here.
Low refrigerant from a slow leak. Salt air and constant vibration from being run 12+ hours a day accelerate small leaks at flare joints and coils. Low gas makes the evaporator coil run too cold, ice can form, and the protection sensor cuts the compressor early.
Dirty filters or a blocked outdoor coil. Dust and outdoor debris restrict airflow, so the indoor coil gets too cold too fast, tripping the freeze-protection cutoff. This is the cheapest cause to rule out and the one we check first.
Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor. Humidity and heat inside the indoor unit can cause the temperature sensor to drift or fail, so the unit reads "room is cold enough" when it isn't.
Voltage fluctuations. Older buildings and some rental complexes have unstable supply, and a compressor that sees voltage dips or spikes can trip its internal overload protection repeatedly.
A failing capacitor. Capacitors degrade faster in heat and humidity. A weak capacitor makes the compressor struggle to start, so it cuts out on overload and tries again shortly after.
What You Can Check Yourself
- Clean or rinse the indoor filter — a clogged filter is the single most common trigger and takes five minutes to rule out.
- Check the outdoor unit isn't boxed in by plants, storage, or debris blocking airflow.
- Note how long each cycle lasts (30 seconds? 3 minutes?) and whether it happens on all settings or only cooling mode — this detail helps a technician diagnose faster over the phone.
- Check the breaker isn't tripping at the same time; that points to an electrical fault rather than the AC unit itself.
What a Technician Actually Does
A proper diagnosis means checking refrigerant pressure with gauges, testing the capacitor's capacitance with a meter, inspecting the thermostat sensor reading against actual room temperature, and checking the coil for ice or restricted airflow. Sizing problems are diagnosed by comparing the unit's BTU rating against the room's size, sun exposure, and number of windows — a common issue in rooms with a lot of west-facing glass, which get punishing afternoon heat load here.

When to Stop Using the Unit and Call Someone
If you hear the compressor trying to start and immediately clicking off with a humming sound, turn the unit off at the breaker and don't keep restarting it — repeated hard-start attempts on a failing capacitor or motor can cause more damage. Ice buildup on the indoor coil or copper line is also a sign to switch off and let it thaw before running it again.
Short cycling almost never fixes itself, and running a unit this way for weeks tends to turn a small repair into a compressor replacement. If your AC is cycling oddly, book a technician for a same-day check — most visits pin down the cause within the first 20 minutes.
