Why Air Conditioners Struggle on Generator Power

Koh Samui loses grid power fairly often, especially during the rainy season when storms bring down lines or the utility does maintenance. Villa owners and renters commonly switch to a portable or standby generator to keep the lights and fridge running, and then wonder why the aircon won't start, or trips the generator the moment it tries.

The reason is the compressor. When an AC compressor starts, it briefly pulls far more current than it needs while running, often 3 to 5 times its normal running amps. A generator sized for your lights, fans and fridge on paper can still be too small for that one-second surge, even though it looks fine on the spec sheet.

Inverter vs Non-Inverter Units on a Generator

This is where the type of AC you have matters a lot:

  • Inverter units ramp the compressor speed up gradually instead of switching straight to full power. They pull a much smaller starting surge and are far more forgiving on generator power, including cheaper portable generators.
  • Non-inverter (fixed-speed) units slam the compressor to full speed instantly. They need a noticeably larger generator, and on marginal power they tend to hum, stall, or trip the breaker instead of starting.

If you're buying a new unit for a villa that regularly loses power, this alone is a good reason to choose inverter.

Sizing a Generator for Your AC

As a rough guide, size the generator for roughly 3 times the AC's running wattage to cover the starting surge, not just its running load:

  • 9,000 BTU inverter split: runs around 800-900W, plan for a generator that can handle a 2,000-2,500W surge
  • 12,000 BTU inverter split: runs around 1,100-1,300W, plan for around 3,000W surge capacity
  • 18,000-24,000 BTU units: running load can reach 1,800-2,200W, surge needs can exceed 5,000W

These numbers assume inverter units. Non-inverter units of the same BTU rating need noticeably more surge headroom, sometimes close to double.

If your generator is also running a water pump, fridge and lights at the same time, add their running wattage on top and stagger the AC's start. Switch the AC breaker on a few seconds after the generator has stabilized, not the instant it starts.

Signs Your Generator Isn't Coping

Watch for these warning signs during an outage:

  • Lights dim sharply the moment the AC tries to start
  • The outdoor unit hums for a second or two but the compressor never kicks in
  • The breaker for the AC circuit trips repeatedly
  • An error code appears on the indoor unit display after a failed start attempt

Repeated failed starts are hard on the compressor. If you see any of these, stop trying to force it and either reduce the other load on the generator or wait for grid power to return.

Protecting the Unit During Outages

A few habits protect the compressor over years of outages, which matters a lot in a place where storms are routine:

  • Wait 3-5 minutes after any power loss or restoration before restarting the AC. The refrigerant pressure needs to equalize, and restarting immediately strains the compressor.
  • Fit a soft-start (easy-start) device on non-inverter units that regularly run on generator power. It smooths the starting surge so a smaller generator can handle the unit reliably. We install these from 2,500฿ depending on unit size.
  • Use a stabilizer or surge protector ahead of the indoor unit if your generator's output voltage fluctuates, which is common with older or budget generators.
  • Turn the AC off before switching from grid to generator or back, so the compressor doesn't try to restart mid-transfer.

Practical Tips for Villa and Rental Owners

If you manage a property with multiple split units and a shared generator for outages:

  • Only run one AC compressor starting at a time. Stagger the units by a minute or two rather than switching all zones on together.
  • Keep the generator's fuel level and oil checked before storm season. A generator running low or under load doesn't hold voltage steady, which is exactly what trips AC starts.
  • Label the breaker panel clearly so whoever is on-site during an outage knows which breakers feed AC units versus other loads.
  • If outages are frequent at your property, a soft-start device or upgrading to inverter units usually pays for itself in fewer failed-start callouts.
