If your air conditioner on Koh Samui runs constantly but the room never feels properly cool, the unit itself may not be the problem. A surprisingly common cause is airflow blocked by furniture, curtains, or wardrobes placed too close to the indoor or outdoor unit. In a climate where AC runs almost every day of the year, even a small obstruction adds up to wasted electricity and faster wear on the system.

How blocked airflow shows up

The signs are easy to miss because the unit still turns on and still blows cold air right at the vent:

  • The room cools slowly even though the unit sounds fine
  • One side of the room stays warm while the air right under the unit feels cold
  • The compressor runs longer than usual and the electricity bill creeps up
  • Curtains near the indoor unit feel damp or pick up a musty smell over time
  • The outdoor fan sounds strained or the unit cycles off earlier than expected

Common culprits in Samui villas and condos

Tropical interiors often work against good airflow without anyone noticing:

  • Floor-length curtains hung directly in front of a wall-mounted unit, catching the cold air before it reaches the room
  • Tall wardrobes or bookshelves placed under or beside the indoor unit, especially in smaller bedrooms
  • Sofas and headboards pushed against the wall below the unit, trapping cool air near the ceiling
  • Plants, scooters, or storage boxes stacked against the outdoor condenser unit on a balcony or utility yard
  • Garden walls or fences built close to the outdoor unit during a later renovation

It's a pattern we see often on service calls: the unit itself checks out fine, but a new wardrobe or a thicker set of curtains installed months earlier has quietly been redirecting the airflow ever since, and nobody connected the two.

Why this matters more in the tropics

In a cooler climate, a slightly blocked vent is just an inconvenience. On Koh Samui, where units run close to year-round against constant heat and humidity, blocked airflow forces the compressor to work harder and longer to reach the set temperature. That means more electricity, more wear on the compressor, and a higher chance of ice forming on the coil because warm room air isn't circulating back through it properly. Outdoors, a condenser with poor airflow around it struggles to release heat, which raises head pressure and shortens the unit's working life.

Quick fixes you can do today

  • Leave at least 15-20 cm of open space in front of and below a wall-mounted indoor unit
  • Tie back or shorten curtains so they don't hang across the airflow path
  • Move wardrobes, shelves, or large furniture away from directly under the unit
  • Clear at least 50-60 cm around the outdoor unit on all sides, including overhead if it sits under a low roof
  • Check that nothing has been stacked against the condenser since the last time someone looked
  • In a condo, check the building rules before moving anything permanent near a shared outdoor unit area, since juristic offices sometimes restrict what can be placed there

When it's not just furniture

If you've cleared the space and the room still isn't cooling evenly, the issue may be inside the unit rather than around it. A clogged filter, a dirty coil, or low refrigerant can produce the same symptoms as blocked airflow. A technician can check both in one visit, confirm whether the obstruction was the real cause, and clean or service the unit if needed.

A good rule of thumb for new furniture or curtains: stand in front of the indoor unit and picture the direction the air shoots out. If anything sits in that direct path within arm's reach, move it before it becomes a habit nobody notices.

If your AC still struggles after rearranging the room, it's worth having someone take a proper look rather than guessing further. You can book a technician for a same-day visit in most areas of the island. We accept cash, Thai QR/PromptPay, or crypto, and there's no appointment needed days in advance for straightforward checks like this.
